Is business writing really that important?

Have you ever questioned whether good writing skills are really that important to your business?

Well, here’s some science that will help make your mind up.

MRI and PET machines have shown reward regions in the mid-brain light up when people read impactful writing. It acts as a stimulus, causing the brain to instantly ask questions and seek answers.

A stimulus makes your customers take action to resolve their questions. And that action would be buying your service or product, of course!

If only it was that easy…

As business professionals, you’re not short of innovative ideas to grow your business. It’s what you do on a daily! But the frustration comes when these ideas don’t translate.

“You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can’t get them across, your ideas won’t get you anywhere.“

Lee Iacocca (born 1924), Automobile executive

Whether it’s a lack of confidence in writing, a low skillset or specific physical/mental disabilities, writing for your business can feel like a mammoth task.

Not to mention the headaches about the correct use of grammar and punctuation. (Look out for a future blog that smashes this ‘set of rules’!)

My aim with ‘Write your Business’ is to give you weekly tools and up-to-date knowledge to arm you with the BEST quality business writing for high results.

Things we’ll cover in the future:

  • Writing for websites
  • Emails
  • Social posts
  • Adverts
  • Campaign writing
  • Product packaging
  • Articles and Blogs
  • Content writing
  • Copywriting
  • Storytelling

& more!

You can always let me know if you’d like to learn about another type of writing e.g. more formal business writing structures such as programmes, white papers and reports.

Where does writing crop up in your business?

You might be thinking – my business doesn’t really need long articles and I don’t write long posts or detailed information.

Perhaps not, but you might be writing more than you realise.

2 min exercise

Starting from when you wake up, mentally run through your day. Make a tally of the times you do any kind of writing.

For example, your writing tally might look like this:

  • Social media post caption
  • Drafting a funding bid
  • Emails to suppliers
  • Email replies to customers
  • Writing an action plan for a new project
  • Updating your website with an upcoming launch
  • Planning a tagline for a new product

As you can see, hours of your day are spent writing.

Some of the biggest challenges for business owners include areas that require excellent writing skills, such as attracting new customers, standing out from the competition and consumer trust.

How can effective business writing benefit you?

55% of businesses in 2024 have said that quality content made them successful.

High-quality writing makes business sense.

👌Establishing trust

The information that you put ‘out there’ builds a picture of your brand. If it is interesting, useful and well-written, people will believe in it. And the more you show up with consistent messaging, the more trust you build. It’s no more complicated than that.

🆕Attracting new customers

Good writers know how to research the target audience and attract the right customers. Psychology plays a part in this, which is another area we’ll dive into in the future.

🌟Standing out from the crowd

Sometimes, readers get no further than the subject line. Most of the time, they switch off in under five seconds. To be competitive in your field, your writing must be excellent. This also involves integrating SEO.

🤝Customer retention

Top-quality writing establishes you and your brand as a voice of authority. Of course people are going to keep coming back to buy from you if they can rely on your messaging.

📈Growth and innovation

More new customers, more retained customers and more connections means more opportunities. Collaborate with other businesses, invest money into projects and try new things with your higher budget.

Overcoming the writing stigma

Picture a confident entrepreneur with lots of expertise in their field. Should their dyslexia diagnosis hold them back from achieving their goals?

Absolutely not.

Now imagine a different business founder, who had a bad experience when writing at school and now dreads writing an email, over-analysing every word.

Disability, neurodiversity, mental health and general life stressors should never be a barrier to business achievements.

Luckily, there are plenty of tools available to help with your business writing.

Help is on the way!

“Know what you bring. Know what you don’t bring. And build a team that covers everything you need.”

Angie Hicks, co-founder of Angie’s List.

We can’t be an expert at everything – although as entrepreneurs, we do try!

Help with your writing can take different formats. The good thing is, you can pick and choose based on your needs and skillset in particular tasks. The top tools are:

  • Speech-to-text systems
  • AI
  • Formats and templates
  • Examples of writing
  • Writing courses

Some of these tools do require a significant investment of time and some lack the human touch that gives your business the competitive edge over others.

That’s why many businesses choose to use a copywriter or content writer. Using a copywriter means you can hand over the writing to an expert and spend more time developing new ideas.

So, now you know that good writing can and does directly impact business growth.
